Salty Fabrics

I have been wearing the ocean all day after I realized I’ve outgrown all the smoke and the zero’s and one’s that prove to be just as suffocating. I’ve gone back to the boutique to get resized only to be told there was nothing in store for me anymore. Any purchase from that point would have done me more harm than good: the bodices would crush my ribs, the skirts would hold my legs captive, and the flounces would flounce out with all of my secrets. I have been wearing the ocean all day to compensate for my own oceans dumped out of heartbreak, except this time the salt cleans out the pain instead of making it sting even more. Yemariam Abebayehu (she/her) is an 18 year old poet of Ethiopian descent from Alberta, Canada. A few months ago, she self-published an anthology (that can be accessed via the link in her Instagram bio @poem_tings) of her poems called "Open Flame." It is a collection of poems that with each stage, allows emotions to be shown with no restraint, like an open flame. Her submission called "Salty Fabrics" (not included in her anthology) speaks about the controlling influence society can have on individuals and the comforting strength one's passion can give them in order to overcome their pain.
